It’s a lovely weekend and a great reason to sit around inside and binge TV shows and movies all weekend. In that honorable pursuit, I aim to be your guide. The following is a list of shows and movies you need to get yourself through the weekend—come rain or shine. Let’s dive in!
Knuckles (Season 1)
With the Sonic films doing pretty well, Paramount is naturally expanding the Sonic cinematic universe. The highly-anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog TV spinoff Knuckles should be a fun diversion for the whole family.
Shogun (Season 1)
Set against the throes of civil war in early 17th century Japan, the show is based on James Clavell’s classic 1975 novel of the same name. It also reimagines the hugely successful 1980 TV series, starring Richard Chamberlain.
In condensing over 1,000 pages into 10 episodes, creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks have faithfully replicated life under a feudal system – a world ruled by lords, known as daimyō, and their loyal samurai – adding much-needed cultural authenticity to the original book and small screen run.
Abott elementary (3 seasons)
The sitcom is a “mockumentary” about a group of passionate teachers and a quirky principal at a Philadelphia public school, Abbott Elementary. Despite the odds stacked against them, the characters are determined to help their students succeed. As of now, the series has a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Parasite (2h 12m)
Remember not that long ago before the world changed, and we could all rally around a South Korean film becoming the first foreign flick ever to win the Oscar for Best Picture? Everything Everywhere All at Once (2h 19m)
Netting a whopping 11 Oscar nominations, this was one of the best movies of 2022. It’s a quirky, non-franchise film with a wholly original plot about a Chinese immigrant mother who owns a laundromat with her husband, has a tense relationship with her daughter, and is hurtled into a fantastical plan to destroy the multiverse. If you want to spend 230 minutes’ watch something that makes you laugh while tugging your heartstrings this is the movie for you
Monkey Man (2h)
For those wanting something a little darker, “Monkey Man” could be your next movie to watch this weekend. A young man named Kid (Dev Patel) spends most of his days in an underground fighting club getting beaten continuously for money. He eventually gets sick of this life and plans revenge to take down a powerful force that caused him immense childhood trauma. Wearing a monkey mask and gathering up his strength, Kid prepares himself to avenge someone he loves by going deep into the corrupted fighting temple.
